Hello, I am Aprameyan (Mayan) Ramanujan. I am 8 years old and am a rising fifth grader (I skipped 2 grades ‐ kindergarten and 3rd grade) at Spring Hill Elementary School, McLean, VA. I am also a Davidson Young Scholar.
I am passionate about history, geography, and science and I won 1st place in the National History Bee (4th grade division), 2nd place in the US History Bee (4th grade division), 3rd place in the National Geography Bee (4th grade division), and I was a semi-finalist in the National Science Bee (4th grade division) competitions held in May 2024 in Orlando, Florida.
I am learning Indian Classical music (vocal) and have given concerts. I love acting and theatre. My friends and I ranked 13th in the World Finals of the Odyssey Of The Mind competitions that were held in Ames, Iowa in May 2024. I am also involved in archery, golf, baseball, soccer, volleyball, basketball, tennis, and martial arts. I enjoy solving puzzles, crosswords and riddles.
I take great interest in expanding my vocabulary and learning new words. I am preparing to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee competition in 2025.
I enjoy coding. In Fall 2021, when I was in first grade, I won first place in an international coding competition for grades 4 and under.
Two of my 4th grade friends suffered from leg fractures and were wheelchair users for many months. Our classroom was initially on the first floor. Given the faulty building elevator, the school administration decided to shift our classroom to the ground floor to ensure that my friends could attend school. I realized that my friends needed a lot more support during their recovery period. My friends' experiences needing additional accommodations and our help with simple tasks got me thinking more about how disabled people go about their daily lives and the fundamental need for accessible spaces and an inclusive society. Through my research, I understood that there were different types of disabilities - visible and invisible. I also learned about the ADA act, the Fair Housing Act, and Section 504 that made it possible for disabled people to receive accommodations and get the support they need. When learning about the law, I also explored the history of how the ADA was drafted and learned about Judy Heumann, who is regarded as the mother of the disability rights movement in the US. Her story was highly inspiring and empowering, and I decided to focus on Judy for my Unsung Heroes project to publicize her story and improve our future. (Excerpt from my process paper created for the Unsung Heroes Project)
Along with my fascination for Judy's life, achievements, and contributions, I also enjoyed the challenge of sharing everything about My Unsing Hero Judy on my website using only 1200 words (other than the About the Author and Bibliography pages). I hope you like my website.
